Some might say that television news doesn't constitute any sort of documentary, but some people are just cranky that way. He claims his work in television news contained far more truth than anything Michael Moore has ever produced. Brian has worked at NBC, ABC, Fox, and CBS affiliates. Most of his work was behind the camera, but he has done on-camera work in Sacramento, Calif. and Salt Lake City, Utah. He served as Chief Photographer for Fox in Sacramento where he tried to keep the photo staff happy, while not necessarily annoying management. Brian earned his Master's Degree in Communications from the University of the Pacific in Stockton, California, and he now teaches television news journalism at Utah State University. He still works for all Salt Lake network affiliates on a freelance basis. His current favorite movies are “Groundhog Day,” at which he marvels at how efficient it must have been to make, and “Blues Brothers,” at which he marvels at how expensive it must have been to make. Brian Champagne appears on the Considering the Sequels Podcast as the special guest for the June 2011 BONUS episode on News Media & Journalism Movies.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://ctspodcastguestbook.blogspot.com/2011/07/20-brian-champagne-broadcast-news.html' title='20.) His love of movies stretches back to 1981, when he and his friends first saw “Raiders of the Lost Ark.” He's been hooked on movies ever since! Having contributed online movie reviews for a number of sites since 2003, Dave now runs his own movie blog, tracking his progress as he attempts to watch 2,500 movies — reviewing one per day — on DVD. Follow him online at DVDInfatuation.com, as new reviews are posted daily. Mr. Boddington graduated from a four-year film school in the U.S. and was immediately hired as a producer for the CTV network in Toronto, where he worked for five years. Mr. Boddington then pursued cinematography on a full-time basis, traveling to five continents to capture a wide variety of footage on 35mm. These travels included an expedition to Antarctica, Egypt — and also Isla Guadalupe — to film great white sharks. In 2008 Richard released his first feature film, the sci-fi thriller, “Dark Reprieve,” which he produced, directed, edited and shot on 35mm. “Dark Reprieve” went on to secure international distribution on TV and DVD. The movie is currently available any place DVDs are rented or sold, including Wal-mart, Target, Best Buy, Blockbuster Video and Barnes & Noble. In 2009 Richard began production on “The Dogfather,” a multi million-dollar family comedy starring Chris Parnell from “Saturday Night Live” and “30 Rock.” “The Dogfather” was completed in January 2010 and premiered in Los Angeles at The International Family Film Festival in March. “The Dogfather” was shot on 35mm, and Richard also served as the film editor. “The Dogfather” will be released nationwide in the United States on January 18, 2011. It’s available on Amazon now. Richard is the winner of eight US Telly awards for outstanding achievement in film. He watched a lot of TV, and his parents instilled a love of cinema in him through trips to the local drive-in and family-owned theater nearby. Barrett’s parents were also among the first in town to buy a Betamax VCR, and recording movies off HBO and renting videos became a family tradition. Barrett began his pursuit of a career in the film industry as a media arts student at Brigham Young University, where he graduated with a BA focused on screenwriting and film theory, along with a second major in English. While at BYU Barrett’s interests began to shift toward production, which he further pursued at Loyola Marymount University Los Angeles, where he recently completed an MFA in film production from the university’s School of Film and Television. LMU allowed Barrett hands-on experience in all aspects of production and post-production as he worked on dozens of projects in various crew positions while mentored by industry professionals. As a student Barrett wrote and directed four short films that have played in various festivals and competitions around the country. Barrett won Best Director and Best Screenwriter at LMU’s Film Outside the Frame competition for his short, “The Pickerell Kids,” and he was the recipient of the production department Dean’s award for his graduating class. Barrett currently works for a major motion picture studio in Los Angeles coordinating distribution of feature-film content for various post-theatrical viewing windows, including hotel and cable pay-per-view, cable Video On Demand, and airings on top subscription cable channels. His time at the studio has given him great exposure and insights into the motion picture business and has expanded his technical understanding as he has worked at the forefront of the ever-changing and expanding world of digital video. Barrett has been married to his wife, Katie, for 9 years. They live in Santa Monica, Calif. with their two daughters. In 2006, Andrew wrote and directed his first feature film, the award-winning “Una Vida Mejor,” a social-awareness drama depicting the lives and struggles of migrant workers in Southern California. The film screened at festivals all over the world and was the recipient of the Special Jury Prize for artistic vision at the 2008 Cinequest Film Festival. It will be available on DVD and video on-demand later this year. In September 2009, Andrew completed “Cleanflix,” a feature-length documentary about the sanitized film movement and the Mormon culture that spawned it. Last September, “Cleanflix” premiered at the 2009 Toronto International Film Festival to enthusiastic, sold-out crowds. Since its premiere, “Cleanflix” has screened at film festivals all over the world, including Michael Moore's invitation-only Traverse City Film Festival and Thom Powers' Stranger Than Fiction film series at the IFC Center in New York City. Because there is obviously nothing good to do in the desert, Luke wasted his childhood watching television and movies. He was one of those nerds who watched Siskel and Ebert, even though two-thirds of the movies reviewed would never open in a theater near him. From a very young age, Luke always said he would be a film critic when he grew up. As time went on, because it seemed like a goal too far to reach, Luke explored more rational career options. After changing his major several times at Utah Valley University, he decided to study all the film he could (at a school without a film program) and go for it. It was there that he began reviewing movies for the student newspaper, The College Times (now known as the UVU Review), and eventually had the great pleasure of geeking out movie-style with Jason Pyles. Upon graduating in 2008, Luke began looking for a way to review films professionally. While covering the 2009 Sundance Film Festival, Luke met fellow aspiring university film critic Aaron Peck. Shortly thereafter, the two created their own site called The Reel Place (www.thereelplace.com) and began looking for other credible outlets to work for while building the site. (Because of the quickly climbing success of The Reel Place, Luke and his trusty team are putting more into the site than ever, including contests and giveaways for free Blu-rays and passes to advance screenings to some of the hottest movies — so check it out!) Luke teamed up with the Talking Pictures television show hosts Rich Bonaduce and Tony Toscano and created the Talking Pictures Podcast, which has ceased production of new episodes. Also, he later landed a weekly spot reviewing movies on The Stubbs Show, a radio program on 101.5 The Eagle, Salt Lake City, KEGA. Most recently Luke was commissioned to write reviews for theatrical coverage on High-Def Digest.com. The events are often based on reality but loaded with plenty of embellishment. Rich’s tales have been published in various national and regional magazines. He has performed and entertained festival audiences throughout the Mid-Atlantic region. Rich earned his Masters of Humanities Literature from California State University, and he is a member of the National Storytelling Network. He likes movies. He likes watching them most of all when they're in theaters, but most of the time his TV and BD player have to suffice. Bill thinks that nothing is better, though, than watching in a darkened cinema with a bag of buttery popcorn in one's lap. Bill has known Jason since the 5th grade. Jason was Bill's nemesis, thanks to a cute girl with a southern accent. Bill and Jason soon learned, however, that their mutual loves for all things Billy Joel, G.I.Joe, and Nintendo were more powerful than a 12-year-old's hormones, and a lifelong friendship blossomed. Andy was a stranger to Bill until June of 2010. Bill isn't sure how Andy feels about The Stranger, Snake-Eyes, or Darknuts. Bill enjoys other things besides movies. He likes playing softball, singing and playing guitar in church on Sundays, watching Pittsburgh's professional sports teams (even the Pirates), and especially spending time with his wife and three kids. Bill's favorite movies are the ones he grew up watching and re-watching. He also loves more recent movies, particularly when they make him laugh, think, choke up, or learn. Bill loves trivia and facts, but he will defend opinion vigorously. Bill does not like writing autobiographically in the 3rd person. Bill was a host of the Considering the Sequels podcast for Episode 1 and Episode 2, and he returned as a guest on Episode 12.

Andy Howell, Host of the Considering the Sequels Podcast

Andy Howell has absolutely no formal education in film studies. His opinions are likely to be based on things like "feelings" and "opinions" without reference to any actual principles of cinematography or film study. He says he simply likes watching movies. He also is a little bit of a "know-it-all," and he is a self-described curmudgeon. Andy has strong opinions about lawyer movies (because he thinks he is one), and he does not seem especially fond of most comic book movies (which will make discussing sequels very fun for him). He also enjoys kayaking, rock climbing, cycling, mountain biking and playing softball. He has a wonderful family, and he lives in Utah. From 2006 to 2008, he wrote movie reviews for The College Times newspaper at Utah Valley State College in Orem, Utah, where he completed a book-length thesis titled "Achieving Genuine Movie Criticism: The Motive of an Artist." He also wrote movie reviews in 2007 for Flix Club, a video store in Utah that rented and sold edited movies. In 2008 Jason wrote movie reviews on political films for Scoop08.com. Jason and Andy Howell began the Considering the Cinema discussion blog in July 2008, and they're still reviewing unusual films there about every two weeks. Later in '08, Jason began writing mini- and full-length movie reviews for The Intelligencer and the Wheeling News-Register newspapers in his hometown of Wheeling, West Virginia, until 2010, when he returned to Salt Lake City, Utah, and began the Considering the Sequels podcast. For the past few years Jason has maintained his formal Considering the Cinema movie review blog, which for the moment, lies dormant. He says his film criticism heroes are Roger Ebert and Stanley Kauffmann, and his inspirational influences are Cody Clark; Dr. Rick Moody; Luke Hickman; and David Chen, Devindra Hardawar and Adam Quigley of the /Filmcast. And despite relentless abuse and persecution, he still says his all-time favorite film is M. Night Shyamalan's "The Village" (2004).
